A home health aide who was secretly videotaped by relatives
of the 88-year-old stroke victim she was hired to care for has been
arrested for yanking the frail woman onto the floor and slapping her,
Nassau police said.
Pearl Campbell, 39, whose last known address is in the Caribbean island of
Jamaica, was arraigned yesterday in First District Court in Hempstead on
one count of endangering an incompetent person, said Sixth Squad
Det. Sgt. Garrett Walsh, at a news conference held yesterday at police
headquarters in Mineola.
The charge is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to 1 year in jail.
Campbell was being held in lieu of $2,000 bond or $1,000 cash bail after
her arraignment.
Police declined to identify the alleged victim from Greenvale or release
her street address, citing concerns for her safety. They also said her
relatives declined to comment.
The charges stem from the video footage taken during the time Campbell
spent alone with the victim, some of which show Campbell treating the
victim roughly, Walsh said.
Relatives of the victim had hired Campbell through an agency in Queens
because she required acute home-based care since her stroke rendered her
unable to care for herself.
But the footage allegedly shows Campbell slapping and pulling the victim,
who can't speak clearly because of her stroke. But Walsh said the victim
did cry out when she was being abused.
"What the tape shows is the health care worker slapping the woman numerous
times in the face," Walsh said. "The woman is heard on the tape being
slapped, moaning. She can't talk. She can't respond, so she couldn't say
'Stop!' She's also, at one point in the tape, yanked down by her arm in
the bathroom."
Walsh added that police have not filed more serious charges of assault
because they could not prove the injuries were serious enough, adding
that even the slapping and pulling down to the floor were likely not
severe enough to warrant the higher charge.
"Right now, we can't prove any injuries," he said.
Walsh said the victim's family decided to buy a "Nanny Cam" through the
Internet when they noticed bruises on her body soon after Campbell moved
into the home in the second week of February to provide 24-hour
care.
He said the victim is on blood-thinning medication which has a side-effect
that makes patients bruise more easily.
However, Walsh said, the family still felt the victim had an unusually
high number of bruises.
They installed a secret camera in a clock and taped the goings-on in the
house for six hours a day for several days, when they were not at home,
Walsh said. They gave the tapes to police on Monday, prompting
Campbell's arrest.
The incident is still under investigation, Walsh said, adding that police
must review two more tapes.
